Theme of the Month

July 2005 - Steps

I took this photograph as an echo of a real-life picture earlier in the month. The model awaits painting at which point the beautiful detail of the steps will be overwhelmed by a layer of primer and matt black paint; July 29th.

Another trip to Leyton Orient Football Club and a deserted grandstand. In a few weeks I imagine it will be full of enthusiastic fans. I will not be one of them - I cannot see the attraction of watching people indulge in sports; July 28th.

Peter spotted this as we were walking round Ledbury today - just shows how much more observant he is than I am. It loosely fits this month's theme but would Genghis Khan approve?; July 27th.

Steps on the Thames at Teddington Lock - a few yards to the right (but in an even less photogenic spot), John Cleese and Michael Palin first performed the Fish Slapping Dance, shown in Episode 28 of Monty Python's Flying Circus; July 26th.

A step-down transformer on a post at Stockwood, Worcestershire - the modern face of electrical distribution!; July 21st.

Steps and shadows, Dorridge Station; July 20th.

A view from below stairs, Dorridge Station; July 20th.

Entrance to the Methodist Chapel, High Street, Burford, Oxfordshire; July 19th.

A couple of ladders skirting the front of an antiques shop, Burford, Oxfordshire; July 19th.

The running board on an International pick-up, St Briavels, Gloucestershire; July 17th.

Stepping stones in a stream of gravel, our garden, Fladbury; July 16th.

Lots of ladders, no snakes, Aston University; July 12th.

A grand entrance, now neglected, Aston University; July 11th.

Fire escape, Aston University; July 11th.

Steps of resistance on an audio fader, a component of a sound mixing desk; July 10th.

A flight of Great Western Railway steps at Fladbury; July 8th.

Picking up on my friend Peter's recent posting, steps with shadows, Pershore; July 8th.

Just to prove that I'm still on the bike, here is the machine chained up in Pershore; July 8th.

The stepping out of a bird, in concrete form, Stratford-upon-Avon; July 8th.

Entry into a wonderful world of smoke, steam, noise and heat, Toddington, Gloucestershire; July 2nd.

Steps for fingers to climb, Pershore; July 2nd.

Stepladders at Jean's, Pershore; July 2nd.

Beware the rotting treads! Pershore; July 2nd

I had many ideas in my head for this month's theme - threes, triangles, corrugations, water sources and wind machines amongst them. Then my friend Peter and I chanced down a previously unknown (to us, anyway) alley in Pershore and the flight of steps grabbed my attention. That's the way I like the themes to come to me. Now the challenge is to find enough images to justify the choice of subject.

Present day photographs for 'Theme of the Month' are taken with either a Sony DSC-V1 or a Nikon D70 digital camera. Pictures prior to 2004 were shot with a variety of Canon and Nikon 35mm cameras and lenses.
